Guitar Basics 101

Textbook for Beginning Guitarists

The "Guitar Basics 101" textbook is great for teaching in a group setting for middle school and above age groups. It can be adopted for private instruction as well. This book contains the most popular and user-friendly repertoire pieces from the "Portraits and Melodies for the Beginning Guitarist" series along with all four of the “Guitar Basics Supplements.” The book is not designed as a self-teaching method book and it is meant for students to use with a good teacher guiding them. This book gives instructors flexibility as it is organized by topics and does not read sequentially from cover to cover. Rather, instructors can jump to specific sections based on the needs of the students. This is important as anyone that has taught guitar knows that there is no such thing as a one size fits all method for teaching guitar. The repertoire found in the "Portraits" section is designed with classical guitar right hand technique in mind, but the sound of the music is highly accessible to students of all backgrounds. There is a good portion dedicated to basic chord playing that is very practical. There is even a section on the blues and the pentatonic scale that students enjoy. Guitar and notation basics along with sight reading practice and beginner appropriate warm ups are included. I have used the materials in this book in some form since 2010 with hundreds of guitar students. I know that this material works well since it has been put to the test. I hope your guitar journey brings you much joy and musical fulfillment!
